Kurasu Traditional Yuzen-Dyeing Tenugui

A new original “Tenugui” has arrived!

Tenugui is a thin but durable cotton cloth that’s been loved in Japan for centuries- a super fast-drying piece of cloth that can be used to wipe, wrap, tie, decorate…you name it, and it comes in all kinds of amazing colors and designs.

The ends are not sewn so that the cloth dries even faster than a regular towels, which makes it very convenient to use outdoors and less susceptible to mold.

In this new original design, Kurasu’s logo was turned into a cute, pixel art style pattern dyed using Yuzen dyeing technique, making a classical and beautiful indigo blue tenugui.

While our previous original tenugui was produced with modern dye-printing, this time we asked a textile dyer in Kyoto that offers a traditional Kyoto style Yuzen dyeing technique.

We are so happy to share this traditional textile art through our original product series-and the texture is just lovely.

Tenugui is a very versatile little thing, and it’s perfect for wrapping small gifts, using it in a kitchen, and the refreshing indigo blue makes a great gift on its own as well.

Size: 35×90cm
Material: 100% Cotton

Made in Kyoto, Japan

  • Since the two ends of a tenugui are not sewn, but left cut off, so they may start to fray from the edges as they are used. This is not a defect, and they will stop fraying after a while.

  • Please note that due to the nature of the dyeing process, the color of the product will bleed into the water (through washing, contact with water or sweat, or friction.) For the first several washes you will see the dye bleeds into the washing water, or the color transferring to other items when it is wet by rain or sweat, etc. Please do not mix and wash with white/pale colored fabrics.

  • The tenugui is dyed with a method called pigment printing. As you use and wash, the excess pigment on the surface will start to come off, causing the fabric surface to appear faded or ruffled. This is a natural development and an ageing process of the product.

  • We recommend hand washing as much as possible, and using a washing net if you wash it in a washing machine.
