About Yamanaka-shikki

Yamanaka-shikki lacquerware originated in the Ishikawa prefecture of Japan, and the methods themselves have been used since the 18th century. Pieces are carved one-by-one by skilled artisans, masters of turning the lathe and carefully applying the blade to manipulate and shape the wood.

The secret of Yamanaka-shikki craftsmanship is tategidori, the way in which the artisans trim the wood used in crafting their wares. Tategidoriinvolves the cutting of wood horizontally, along the grain, rather than the common practice of cutting vertically. This results in a finished product that is far more durable and long lasting end product.

Product Q&A*

No, there is no need to put anything to maintain the wood.

A unique looking dripper with great performance

Once I have started reading more about thermal properties of the drippers, I have decided to try the ones with the best heat retention properties. While plastic ones excel here, they lack the beauty of the natural materials. I went with natural wood and it is indeed a piece of beauty and I reach for it more and more. So far I prefer it with Kono paper and with osmotic brewing method (by Cafec).
